Mom requested that I help her cover Taiwanese singer Sarah Chen’s “情關.” I agreed to provide piano accompaniment, despite not knowing the song. I was lucky enough to find the chords in an easy to read format using a quick Google search. However, not knowing the melody made things harder to spice up and my accompaniment was dull.

Eventually, Mom asked to record “情關” alone. ’Twas a good opportunity to test out my Samson Q2U, so I loaded up GarageBand on my MacBook and handed her the mic. It was the first big test for the Samson and it performed decently. For singing, the volume levels had to be adjusted, but that was easy.

Funny enough, the recording that Mom ended up sending to all her friends was one where she first sang into her $20 VERKB Karaoke mic (aka a mic with a built-in speaker providing immediate amplification) and then recorded it with the Samson. Her reason for doing so was because she liked the echo effect of the VERKB. (I was tempted to tell her the effect could be easily reproduced afterwards, but the lazy side of me let things be.)
