I streamed The Matrix Resurrections on Wednesday afternoon with my dad (warning: spoilers ahead). Back in the day, the original 1999 Matrix movie was my dad’s favorite movie and one of the few DVDs we owned. During holiday parties, we would often take it out and play it while guests were over.

This new Matrix film tells a very similar story as the old trilogy. Once again, Thomas Anderson (aka Neo) is a software engineer who realizes that he’s living in a simulation and breaks out into the real world. Overall, I found the movie a little long and convoluted. Certain elements don’t make perfect sense unless you remember all the details from the original trilogy.

In regards to the main plot, I found it strange how Neo was willing to do so much just for the love of someone who may or may not be. This Neo only knows Trinity in his thoughts. He can’t even be certain that the woman he saw in the pod next to his is the real deal. Nevertheless, he insists on putting many others in danger in order to stage a dangerous rescue attempt.

Anyway, my opinion on the film is not fully formed. I will have to give the movie a rewatch in order to digest the plot better. However, I do have to give the movie praise for its action sequences. The fights were well choreographed and the CGI was fun to watch.

PS: it would’ve been so much better if they had gotten Hugo Weaving and Lawrence Fishburne to return as Agent Smith and Morpheus
