Friday night, I watched Spider-Man: No Way Home with my friends Tony and Velu at the AMC Mercado (warning: spoilers ahead). This newest film is set within the MCU. Peter Parker and his friends MJ and Ned are appalled to learn that they have been rejected from MIT due to Peter’s exposure as Spider-Man (and the negative publicity that comes along with that).
Peter enlists the help of Dr. Strange to try to right things. Dr. Strange agrees to run a spell causing the world to forget Peter is Spider-Man. However, Peter keeps interrupting the spell because he’s reluctant to let his friends and relatives forget who he is. This corrupts the spell and causes the appearance of many characters from other universes, including two other Spider-Mans. To keep things short, the Spider-Mans eventually team up and defeat the many villains.
Despite the victory, the universe seems to be merging uncontrollably. The only way to fix this is to have Dr. Strange go through the memory forgetting spell. As a sacrifice, Peter Parker tells Dr. Strange to do it. The film ends with Peter Parker in a world that has been reset. There, his relationship with MJ never existed. Peter decides to start anew and begins life as Spider-Man once again.
Personally, I think the idea of the multiverse has been overused in the MCU lately. Cross universe portals and what not have appeared so often that it has started feeling repetitive. Even so, the multiverse works well in this Spider-Man. Seeing all the relics from the past was a lot of fun. Tobey Maguire is by far my favorite Spider-Man and seeing him on the big screen again was great.
