While discussing Salomons with my dad, I hopped onto the REI website to show him the pricey shoes. To my surprise, I glimpsed a pair of Sense Ride 4’s for 70% off (aka $120 > $35). Not wanting to miss out on a great deal, I pulled out my Chase Visa and bought those Salomon trail runners later that night.

The ones on sale were women’s shoes in a bright red color, but that didn’t deter me. Using the American sizing system, I figured that a women’s size 10.5 would fit me well.

The shoes were cheap enough that REI did not offer free shipping. During lunchtime on Tuesday I bussed over to the REI Co-op on El Camino and picked up my new buy.

The next few days, I tried wearing the new Salomons around the house. Before long, I noticed that there was approximately a finger’s width space behind my foot. A quick comparison showed the sizing of my new Sense Ride 4’s and my old Odyssey Pro’s are very similar. That means that worst comes to worst, tightening the laces could help.

Anyway, I ended up trading down. After bussing to REI Saratoga on Friday, a very friendly employee walked me through finding the right size. It was a close call, but in the end I chose women’s size 9.5 over 10.
