On the way back from trading in my shoes at REI, I stopped by Panda Express. It was my first time there in forever (maybe even 20 years!!), so I went for the default: a bowl of orange chicken + fried rice w/Sprite on the side. The place was super packed; at one point there were 15–16 people in line. Anyhow, I was lucky enough to score a seat indoors.
Interestingly enough, I couldn’t help but notice that there were barely any Chinese folk present. Not including the staff, I counted only two other East Asians. I suppose it makes sense considering how there are many more authentic, less-Americanized options nearby. (Same reason why you’d see fewer Mexicans at a Taco Bell compared to a street food truck.)
As for the meal, I’ll admit that I enjoyed it. I’m a sucker for sweets, so the sugary crunchy flavor of the orange chicken played well with my taste buds. However, that may be the last time I eat at Panda Express for a while. The food isn’t interesting enough to coax me to make the long journey by bus. Plus, if I ever get cravings for orange chicken, there are always closer options like Yoshinoya.
