Quick Summary: McPlant tastes fake, but is similar enough to other McDonald’s burgers that it can act as a good substitute.
I first heard about the Bay Area McPlant promotion when I drove past a banner for it on Superbowl Sunday. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but good online reviews caught my attention. I’m still miffed that I missed the McRib last December so I decided not to wait. On Saturday, I walked over to the De Anza McDonald’s, ordered a McPlant + a diet Coke, and ate it in the picnic area at Calabazas Park.
The construction of my McPlant was sloppy and I felt my burger falling apart during my meal. The actual taste of the artificial meat patty was alright. It was fairly realistic, but I could definitely tell it was not real meat. However, it was good enough that it would probably be my default option if I ever find myself at a McDonald’s with friends. Besides, now that they have discontinued their salads, it’s not like there’s many other vegetarian choices.
All in all, I wouldn’t recommend specifically heading out to a McDonald’s just to try the McPlant, especially if you are a carnivorous meat eater. But if you ever find yourself in the area, might as well give it a shot.
PS: fast food is so much more expensive these days. My take-out meal cost $8.08. (I was expecting to pay around $4.)
