The star of this week’s show at the Kang residence was a blue hummingbird that made its nest on a succulent plant hanging near the glass screen door of the backyard.

The little creature first showed up on Saturday the 18th and was cute enough to earn a garden pass from my parents. That’s no small feat, considering that even squirrels don’t meet the bar and get routinely chased away. Online research reveals that hummingbirds generally lay two eggs and sit on them for 11 to 18 days. The first egg showed up on the 21st, so it should be around at least til March.

Mom was the one most excited about the fellow mother and was sure to report any small changes (“2 eggs! 3 eggs! …oh wait, that’s just a feather”). Dad was excited enough to repurpose one of his old webcams into a live feed, giving us a good look into its day-to-day life.

$37.70 was spent to pamper the hummingbird with a new feeder (“KONIZY Blown Glass”) and bird food sugar water (“Kaytee Hummingbird ElectroNectar”). Funny enough, this particular mommy bird showed no interest in her new toys / presents; as partial reconciliation, other birds did enjoy these luxuries, so the money was not all for waste.

PS: judging from pictures on Wikipedia, I want to say that this hummingbird is Anna’s (aka “calypte anna”), but my parents disagree

Hi everybody. I like food, Broadway showtunes, Pokemon and LEGOs. Oh, and I also do a bit of programming occasionally.
