Discovering a significant presence of black fungus or mold around your bedroom window can be concerning and requires immediate attention. The appearance of mold suggests excess moisture and the Levoit Dual 150 humidifier was blamed.

In the pursuit of addressing these concerns, I considered the purchase of a $80 LEVOIT Classic300S smart humidifier (or something similar), but my dad realized the potential for a more cost-effective approach, especially given that we already owned all the necessary materials. Our existing materials included the Levoit Dual 150 humidifier itself, a Xiaomi thermometer w/humidity measurement, and a Xiaomi power plug featuring an iPhone app for smart control.

Our new custom smart humidifier boasts several features. It automatically turns on and off based on real-time humidity levels measured by the Xiaomi thermometer. Scheduled on/off times can be programmed. It can also be set to run for a certain number of minutes.

The construction process involved connecting the Levoit Dual 150 humidifier to the Xiaomi power plug. The Xiaomi power plug and Xiaomi temperature/humidity sensor were both linked to the Mi Home system, establishing communication and calibration for readings. The Mi Home app allowed for custom conditional arguments for easy adjustments and efficient device control (i.e. IF humidity > 60% THEN turn off). Surprisingly, the entire assembly was completed in just 30 minutes, showcasing the simplicity and effectiveness of the DIY approach.

In conclusion, the custom smart humidifier has proven to be an effective and tailored solution to our specific needs. It addresses concerns related to nighttime dryness, enhances sleep quality, and contributes to the prevention of grand mal seizures. The cost-effective DIY approach, coupled with the use of existing materials and the Xiaomi app for control, demonstrates the practicality and efficiency of this home project.

PS: Tim’s use of the humidifier is different from most. Most people use a Levoit to maintain their humidity levels ~50%. Tim uses it to help with his dry mouth in the early mornings by raising it to ~85%.

Hi everybody. I like food, Broadway showtunes, Pokemon and LEGOs. Oh, and I also do a bit of programming occasionally.
