My Labcorp blood test was supposed to be on the 8th, but it was delayed because of a mishap in forms (aka Dr Shin’s fault). That same day, my dad promised to pick up the updated forms from the doctor’s office, but never followed through. I suspect this is because my parents strongly believe that a blood test for me (aka a 30-something that does 20+ minutes of cardio daily) is unnecessary.

I can see where they are coming from, but I disagree. On the 15th, I decided to take things into my own hands. I jogged 1.5mi to Dr Shin’s office, picked up the forms, and scheduled a Labcorp test for 3/24/22 at 8:45am.

The morning of the 24th, I got out of bed promptly at 7:45pm, got dressed and began my trek to Labcorp on Prospect. As I was leaving, my dad offered to give me a ride or pick me up, but I smiled politely and turned him down. Walking for 60 minutes there and back might seem long, but I had my reasons.

More specifically, I wanted a cortado. Out of all the yuppie habits mocked in South Park s25e04 “City People” (i.e. La Croix, Tesla, pilates, MacBooks), the only one I didn’t recognize was cortado.

Perhaps that’s because I’m more of a tea person. Cortado is a Spanish coffee with a 1:1 ratio of hot milk to double shot espresso. Despite being popular, the drink was hard to find in Cupertino / West San Jose; most coffee shops (including Starbucks) did not have it on their menu. Peet’s did have an Instagram post featuring the drink, so I was willing to give them a shot.

The risk I took was worth it. After my Labcorp blood test, I crossed the street and walked to Peet’s. The menu was indeed devoid of cortado references, but the barista on-call knew exactly what it was and brewed me one. Sipping the smooth Spanish espresso while munching on a hot almond croissant made for a nice, relaxing breakfast. By the time I left the porch, I was totally revitalized and the walk back was easy-peasy.
