Hummingbird babies tend to fly from the nest, “fledging” three weeks after birth. For our birdies, three weeks would coincide with April Fool’s Saturday. Over that weekend, the two babies were indeed much more active. Mom had a jolly time whistling at the birds and photographing their happy reactions. However, it was not until the Monday afterward that the first one left home.
#1 flew away on 10am, April 3rd. #2 was more timid compared to its older sibling. Our camera feed showed it flapping often, but it looked too scared to leave. At 3:45pm, April 4th, #2 was noticed missing (by me!); examining our Wyze logs, it had left at 3:42pm.
Both fledglings would occasionally fly back into the yard, but they seem to have left the nest for good. Instead, they preferred hanging out around our peach and persimmon trees and our clothes lines. Weird as it sounds, their mother would still feed them mouth-to-mouth from time to time.
Once we verified they were gone, my parents cleaned up the area and took down the nest + security cam. Gross as it sounds, those two baby birds sure did shit a lot. Our glass door was covered head-to-toe with bird dung from the last few weeks. Anyhow, it has been a fun 45 days! Dear birdies, may your pollination journeys be safe!
PS: #2’s timid behavior continued into its adult life, allowing us to tell which bird had flown into the yard by the nature of their flight
