Watched The Mermaid (2016, directed by Stephen Chow, possible spoilers ahead). I got introduced to this Chinese film by a 3/7/23 message (from Oliver) in our Potatoes discord. Looking back, there was actually no rec. It was just the trailer that was posted, because it was so freaking strange.
Does it deserve the 96% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes? IMO, no. I’m more inclined to side closer with the 60% score given by the audience. Then again, The Mermaid had many funny moments and I definitely was entertained. Be warned that there were moments that were a little cringeworthy; for example, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for Uncle Octopus as he got his limbs slowly grilled and sawed off.
