Due to their Taiwanese upbringing, my parents have an adverse opinion of durian. It goes without saying that the spiky, stinky fruit never makes it way into our pantry. I can totally understand where they are coming from, but can’t help feeling curious about it once in a while.
Anyhow, the other day while shopping at H Mart, I saw that their in-house frozen durian slices were on sale for 40% off. After some thought, I decided to go for the bargain.
Tuesday evening, I defrosted the box of durian (aka 1lb from Thailand) and offered pieces to my brother, my mother, and my father; Chris was the only one who accepted any. After a few bites, he quickly backtracked and gave most of his portions back to me. Out of courtesy to my mom, I ended up finishing his leftovers so we wouldn’t need to store any in the fridge. (I ate so much that you can safely say that it became my dinner.)
Anyway, the texture of the yellow fruit reminded me of sweet yams and ice cream. (Chris agrees with the ice cream assessment.) I enjoyed the fruit and wouldn’t mind having it again. The fact that it is incredibly nutritious makes it even more appealing. However, its high price (and the other Kang family members disgust for the fruit) means I won’t eat it too often.
PS: perhaps because it was frozen, the H Mart durian did not actually have that strong of an odor.
