Mom loves baking cheesecakes. One of the reasons I join my parents’ morning coffee is to get a slice of that creamy goodness. Anyway, for her birthday I proposed grabbing a cheesecake from Uncle Tetsu and surprising her with it. Dad agreed to the plan and volunteered to drive.

That is, until he realized that the closest Uncle Tetsu’s is all the way in Westfield Valley Fair mall. During the Sunday afternoon trip in our Lexus SUV, we ran the errands around Cupertino (picking up prescriptions from CVS, grabbing groceries from Trader Joe’s) and then went straight home.

I thought that was that, but while unloading groceries, Dad had a change of heart. He asked if I was willing to walk with him to the 85°C on De Anza to pick up something for Mom. By then, I had already accumulated 17k steps and was a wee bit tired. However, I jumped at the opportunity right away because I knew it was rare. (Nowadays, Dad never comes out for walks; the last one I remember taking with him was in the fall of 2020.)

We walked to 85°C where we picked up a “Mango Panna Cotta” cup for Mom. I tried to steer us towards a cake, but Dad thought it would be too rich for the Kangs.

Anyhow, the cup of mango pudding was revealed at 9:44am on Monday. Upon being presented with the 85°C box, my mom laughed merrily, took several photos and accepted our birthday wishes with a big smile. In hindsight, Dad was right about choosing that cup of pudding; not only was it one of Mom’s favorite 85°C desserts, it was actually big enough to serve all four of us.
