On Sunday, Eric, Tony, Yining and I drove all the way to Union City to bring home Dave’s Hot Chicken. This upstart NorCal location of a popular SoCal fried chicken chain was brought to our attention by Tony; what made Dave’s particularly significant was that the rapper Drake heavily invested in it.

Tony was not the only one interested in this new spot (aka the first of three planned for the Bay). All sorts of folks were at Dave’s that day. Our friend Bernie, who was driving separately, did not order his meal beforehand like the rest of us. We got to Dave’s at the same time, but he had to join us 45min late after waiting in line.

Each of us ordered the “1 Tender + 1 Slider” option; where we differed was on the sides. (I went healthy with cole slaw; Eric got mac and cheese; everyone else stuck with good ol’ french fries.) The meal, which we ate in Tony’s Sunnyvale apartment’s community clubhouse while watching NBA Finals Warriors vs Celtics game 2, was filling and enjoyable.

Everyone played it safe when it came to spiciness…except Yining. The young lad went for it all and played with the “Reaper” (aka the level beyond “Extra Hot” on the menu). His spice tolerance allowed him to finish his chicken, but he acknowledged it was hot as hell.

As for Dave’s secret dipping sauce, I liked it enough that I did not try any of the others. (Tony claimed that the honey sauce also went along very well, especially when sandwiched with the bread.) Overall, it was a nice piece of meat, but it is simply located too far. Believe it or not, splitting gas money that evening cost more than my dinner.

PS: a game of H-O-R-S-E afterwards confirmed that my shoulders are still too weak to play basketball
