Tried out Popeye’s new Blackened Chicken Sandwich. As I was ordering, the young cashier warned it would take 7min to cook; I consented to the extra wait time and told him to go for it.

Unlike almost everything else on the Popeye’s menu, the Blackened Chicken is not fried. Essentially this new sandwich is a large chunk of grilled chicken between two pieces of bread. The meat texture was a bit tough, but I managed to deal with it fine. (Just had to make sure to chew thoroughly and eat slowly.)

The oil content of Blackened Chicken could be less than Popeye’s standard fried chicken sandwich. My evening regurgitations later that day were not stained with the yellow bits of oil that typically appear after eating greasy meals.

Personally, I prefer the crunchy texture of the standard chicken, but Blackened Chicken is good too. However, with my throat / esophagus issues, neither is a safe bet. Hard meats easily get stuck as blockage; high oil results in excess mucus generation at night. I survived this time, but I probably should avoid any Popeye’s sandwiches going forward.
