Last Sunday, I ate breakfast at Bobbi’s Cafe with my friends Eric, Tony, and Yining. It has been ages since we dined at this local mom and pop coffee shop. When we got there at 9:40am, there was a big crowd waiting outside. The Sunday morning popularity gave off good vibes, which unfortunately did not last for long.

We were seated within ten minutes, but it took quite a while before the waiter came by our table with the menus. Breakfast / brunch spots are generally great for someone on keto, but I had a hard time deciding what to order. In the end, I went for the “Scotsman’s Breakfast”: two eggs, two strips of bacon, and a toast (which I substituted for two more strips of bacon).

That turned out to be the wrong choice. The eggs and bacon looked pathetically small on my plate. I couldn’t help but theorize that I’d been cheated a little; the $13 (before tax + tip) meal could have easily been made for <$2 at the Safeway down the street.

My friends’ plates looked much more filling, likely due to their inclusion of large amounts of hash browns and toast. Perhaps those items are a specialty of this restaurant / cafe; most of the breakfast dishes on the menu seemed to feature them heavily.

Anyway, the service we were treated to that day was really bad. My toast > bacon substitute didn’t come out until I went up to the counter and asked about it near the end of my meal. Yining also had to remind the waiter about his own substitute requests before they were fulfilled. All in all, the experience was bad enough that Yining vowed to never return again.

PS: a photo on Yelp shows that Scotsman’s Breakfast in 2016 was only $7.50, close to half the price it is today
