Saturday ended my 2-week run of esomeprazole magnesium (aka “Nexium 24hr”). This popular PPI was started to combat my GERD. After a four day ramp-up period, I started seeing results. During the run, I can safely say that my stomach was no longer as bloated.
Nexium showed its true power last Wednesday, when I accidentally ate lunch at The Counter instead of Yoshinoya. Even after a greasy burger + Coke + onion rings (and then an oily salmon for dinner), there was not much bloating in my tummy.
As for side effects, the ones that come to mind are dry mouth and tiredness. I can’t blame the PPI for sure, but these felt related.
Dry mouth was a big deal. My saliva was thick + white at times, especially in the morning and evenings, allowing myself to easily trigger additional negative effects. In fact, it could’ve been partly behind the streak of CPS seizures that began mid-July. (Thick mucus / saliva in throat && bad neck posture => poor oxygen to brain => confusion spell seizure.)
Tiredness and fatigue caused me to sleep closer to 9pm on most days. It also caused me to take more naps. On one of the days, I napped over 3 hours, at least according to Apple Watch.
Overall, Nexium PPI did prevent acid reflux. However, I still had trouble swallowing due to the thick mucus and saliva. If Nexium was truly responsible for the dry mouth, then taking it would be in vain. Anyway, I set a calendar event in four months (aka when I’m next permitted on Nexium according to the bottle), but going forward I will try to primarily rely on diet.
