Mom and Dad had a minor quarrel about what their 32-year-old son should wear to bed. Dad insists that my long-sleeve green cotton shirt is too warm for summer and that a T-shirt should be fine. Mom disagrees, claiming the lows of 60F are chilly, especially since we leave the windows open.

To prove his point, Dad revealed that he had come across me soaked in sweat several times this week. (He suggests these could be the result of mini-seizures, but I disagree; the Monday 11pm example we looked at on AutoSleep showed no significant heartrate increase.)

Weird as it sounds, they are both right. The Bay Area has been spared from the heat wave that has been plaguing the rest of the US, but things are still warm. (Last week we had 85F highs and minor drizzle.) The green long-sleeve combined with my thick blankets definitely makes things hot. However, GERD makes things complicated.

Lying down for extended amounts of time worsens GERD symptoms. One of the side effects is more fluid accumulating in my chest. By early morning, all that fluid makes my upper body rather chilly. Wearing the green long-sleeve is a good way to counter that coldness. (My other solution is to hug a pillow tightly.)

The two Kang lovebirds eventually settled on having their 1989 creation wear a lighter long-sleeve. IMHO, it doesn’t help with the morning coldness, so it’s basically a T-shirt equivalent. Going forward, my own personal solution will be to try to control GERD better. Controlled GERD equals no more morning coldness, greatly simplifying what to wear.
