I finished watching the last episode of The Office (“Finale”) at 8:09pm on Wednesday, August the 4th, 2021. It’s silly, but completing such a long show feels like nothing short of a big accomplishment. Admittedly, I haven’t finished all the specials, but those don’t really count ;).
The show itself was quite enjoyable and a good way to get reminded of what life was like a decade ago (i.e. using Internet Explorer on Windows XP). I thought the seasons without Steve Carrell would flop, but they turned out to be better than expected; IMO Dwight, Jim and Andy are the ones that hold it up. The finale itself, centered around the marriage of Dwight and Angela, was a decent fitting conclusion that ties up the loose ends.
If I had to give some criticism, I’d point out the lack of Asian characters and cultural references. (Kelly Kapoor does count a little bit, but she’s not enough.) Last I checked, AAPIs make up 7% of the United States population and are very abundant throughout the American corporate workspace; having absolutely no East Asian characters feels off.
For my next TV sitcom, I’m probably going to go with Friends. The entire show is already sitting on my hard drive. However, things are not for certain. The fact that Star Trek: The Next Generation is free to stream on Amazon Prime also makes it tempting. Then again, the crazy number of episodes for either of those shows (236 and 178, respectively) makes both of them daunting.
PS: finished CuriosityStream’s Faster mini series; next series I will watch will probably be The Last Dance
