Happy Friday! Here are some tidbits from around September 10th, 2021:

Cinderella. This Amazon Original musical was released last Friday and features singer Camila Cabello as the lead title character. My dad and I ended up watching it Thursday afternoon. To summarize, I agree with the critics that the changes made to the classic fairy tale are cringeworthy. However, some of the pop tunes they borrowed ended up fitting better than I thought they would.

Jiwa. Did some research and found that 鸡娃 are probably the Chinese characters for the “jiwa” term mentioned in the September 6th NPR article I shared with friends (“Forget Tiger Moms. Now China’s ‘Chicken Blood’ Parents Are Pushing Kids To Succeed” by Emily Feng). Unlike “tiger moms,” “jiwa” is actually not too prevalent outside of China, so finding the right match was more difficult than expected.

Fall Detection 911. Wednesday morning, I discussed the Apple Watch 911 issue with my parents. I was advised to keep the Emergency SOS Fall Detection feature enabled, even if there is no way to turn off calling 911 as well.

In a way, I suppose it makes sense. If I’m out with friends or family, the 911 call can be cancelled by the people around me. If I’m out on my own, a minor CPS staring spell shouldn’t trigger SOS. If I go as far as to lose consciousness, then something serious is probably going on and an emergency 911 call should be well warranted.
