Thursday afternoon, I played around with adjustments to the sitting mode of my standing desk. First, I adjusted the keyboard tray so that it is screwed in on the third notch instead of the first. The slightly higher position prevents the tray from rubbing on my legs when fully extended.

Next, I lowered the standing desk to its lowest position (aka from 74 to 69) and placed my keyboard on top of the desk instead of on the extendable tray. Having the mouse all by itself in the middle of the tray felt great on my shoulders. Being able to rest my left arm on an empty part of the tray was also nice. However, the keyboard felt a tad bit high, even with the lowered height.

To fix the height issue, I salvaged a seat cushion from the dining room. The cushion is 2” tall and made typing on the keyboard very comfortable again. Unfortunately, the extra chair height did not play well with my short calves. Before long, my thighs started feeling sore so I quickly put it aside.

Alas, things would be perfect if my standing desk could go lower than 69 (or if my legs were longer). For now, my plan is to keep the keyboard on top of the desk most of the day. During the times I need to type a lot, I will temporarily move the keyboard down back onto the tray. This setup may seem hacky, but it should work; in this day and age where iPads abound, being able to get around the webs without typing much is a given.
