After lunch, my dad and I watched PAW Patrol: the Movie (released in August 2021, directed by Cal Brunker). Throughout this Canadian Nickelodeon animated children’s film, I couldn’t help but notice that the CGI cars on screen looked amazingly similar to plastic toys. Perhaps that was done on purpose; I suppose it would make it much easier to sell the toys to kids.
The movie is light on plot and unrealistic at times, but the chemistry of the cute puppies on screen made it watchable even for a pair of old men. However, compared to movies from Pixar or DreamWorks, this one really is aimed at young children.
On a movie related note, my dad and I have finished watching the Rebuild of Evangelion series. When asked what he thought, the first thing my dad said about Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time was that it was “outlandish.”
I definitely see where he’s coming from. Many parts of the finale were super fantastical and over-the-top. Often, the images on the screen were nothing more than whimsical patterns and colorful designs (aka what would be great for a stoner flick). Not to mention, the giant Rei Ayanami head near the end was definitely creepy as hell.
Anyway, now that I’ve finished all three possible endings to Evangelion, I feel obligated to provide an opinion. Personally, I like the TV series + End of Evangelion best, but the plot changes in the Rebuild movies are also interesting and definitely deserve a viewing. For someone new to Evangelion, I’d say watch ’em all.
PS: after some back and forth via Stanford MyHealth, I convinced my neurologist to write me a letter excusing me from October jury duty!
